Echocardiography
Advanced Ultrasound Imaging of the Heart
Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses ultrasound to provide real-time images of the heart's structure, function, and valves — without any radiation exposure.
What Is Echocardiography?
Echocardiography uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the heart. It allows your cardiologist to evaluate the size and shape of the heart, the thickness and movement of the heart walls, the function of the heart valves, and the overall pumping function of the heart.
At HeartWise Cardiology, echocardiography is performed and interpreted by an experienced specialist cardiologist using modern imaging equipment.
Types of Echocardiography We Offer
Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE)
The standard resting heart scan. Ultrasound images are obtained by placing a transducer on the chest wall. This is the most commonly performed echocardiogram and requires no special preparation.
Stress Echocardiography
Assesses how the heart performs under physical stress. Exercise echocardiography combines treadmill testing with ultrasound imaging to evaluate for exercise-induced changes in heart function.
Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE)
Provides highly detailed imaging via a probe passed through the oesophagus. Offers superior image quality for assessing heart valves, atrial structures, and detecting cardiac sources of embolism.
What to Expect
The test is painless and typically takes 30–60 minutes. A gel is applied to your chest and a transducer is moved gently over the skin to capture images.
No preparation is usually required for a standard transthoracic echocardiogram. Specific instructions will be provided for stress or transoesophageal studies.
