Lipid Disorders

Dr Tashi Zhaxiduojie (FRACP, PhD) at HeartWise Cardiology specialises in the diagnosis and management of lipid disorders — from high LDL cholesterol and familial hypercholesterolaemia, to elevated Lp(a), statin intolerance, and advanced therapies including PCSK9 inhibitors.

Why Lipid Management Matters

Abnormal cholesterol levels are among the most important — and most treatable — risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Many people with dangerously high cholesterol have no symptoms at all. Specialist assessment allows accurate diagnosis, identification of underlying causes (such as genetic conditions), and access to the full range of modern therapies.

Conditions We Manage

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH)

A genetic condition causing very high LDL cholesterol from birth. FH significantly increases the risk of early heart disease. It is underdiagnosed but treatable — early identification and treatment can be lifesaving. Dr Tashi can diagnose FH using clinical criteria and arrange cascade screening for family members.

High LDL Cholesterol

Elevated LDL ("bad") cholesterol is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, statins, ezetimibe, and newer therapies such as PCSK9 inhibitors for high-risk patients who need further LDL reduction.

Lipoprotein(a) — Lp(a)

Lp(a) is a genetically determined lipoprotein that raises cardiovascular risk independently of LDL cholesterol. Most people are unaware of their Lp(a) level. Testing is recommended for anyone with a family history of early heart disease. Management focuses on aggressive risk factor reduction and, in eligible patients, PCSK9 inhibitor therapy which modestly lowers Lp(a).

Statin Intolerance

Some patients experience muscle aches, weakness, or other side effects with statin therapy. True statin intolerance requires careful assessment. Alternatives include lower-dose statins, alternate-day dosing, rosuvastatin, ezetimibe, bempedoic acid, and PCSK9 inhibitors — so that cholesterol can still be managed effectively.

PCSK9 Inhibitor Therapy

PCSK9 inhibitors are injectable medicines that reduce LDL cholesterol on top of statin therapy. They are PBS-subsidised in Australia for eligible patients with ASCVD or familial hypercholesterolaemia. Dr Tashi offers online GP referral pathway for PBS eligibility review for advanced Lipid-Lowering Therapy.

Complex & Mixed Dyslipidaemia

Some patients have complex lipid abnormalities including elevated triglycerides, low HDL, or mixed hyperlipidaemia that require specialist assessment. Dr Tashi provides comprehensive lipid panels, risk stratification, and personalised management plans aligned with Australian and international guidelines.
